Happy New Year! 2023 was filled with numerous memorable moments for me. My family and I explored two international destinations, visiting Mexico and Japan, and experienced Spring Break in Washington D.C., alongside several delightful road trips. We hosted various gatherings and ventured out on numerous occasions. Amidst these activities came a multitude of enticing culinary experiences. Despite maintaining a Keto lifestyle for over three years, I've mastered navigating these temptations and swiftly returning to my routine when needed. We're all human, and no matter how disciplined one may be, moments of indulgence can occur. Yet, that's completely fine. The appeal of Keto lies in its sustainability—it's straightforward to resist temptations when committed, and equally uncomplicated to resume the journey when momentarily diverted.
Here is how.
Know your alternatives - When dining out, opt for a side of salad instead of mashed potatoes and fries. Choose lettuce wraps for your burgers and order protein-rich dishes such as Roasted Chicken, Steak, and Salmon. Request sauces on the side if possible. You dan also bring your own low-carb tortillas or keto buns to restaurants with some pre-planning. At home, substitute traditional rice with riced cauliflower or shirataki rice. Explore shirataki noodles for your noodle dishes and discover delicious keto-friendly alternatives like Immi ramen, available online or at stores like Whole Foods. Local grocery stores often carry keto bread, burger and hotdog buns, and bagels, as well as Mission Foods' zero-carb tortillas. Currently, I'm using their zero-carb tortillas and find them to be a great addition to my keto lifestyle.
Get creative and have fun - It's important to have your basic keto meals like mushroom omelette, avocado salad, and roasted chicken. But if you get a little more creative you can make something like cheese crust tacos, pork-rind crusted fried chicken, and cauliflower rice sushi rolls. And if you get creative enough, you can even grow your own instagram account and start getting paid from brands! But I can talk more about that in another blog entry.
